“Southern Labor and Black Civil Rights: Organizing Memphis Workers”

A 6 page review of the book by Author Michael K. Honey. Honey outlines the societal conditions which were at play in 1930s Memphis Tennessee in comparison to the various laws which were on the books to protect black rights. The contention is made that custom can, and does, sometimes outweigh law. This was the case in Memphis but the arrival of the Civil Rights movement and such efforts as the labor movement was soon to turn the tides more in favor of the severely disadvantaged classes in this southern community. The societal move towards unionization of the workplace was particularly advantageous. No additional sources are listed.

“The California Cauldron”: A Review of the Problems Relating to Immigration Which are Facing California

A 4 page review of William A. Clark’s “The California Cauldron”, a book which explores the impacts of recent immigration on California. Clark explores the changes in laws and other factors which have led California to become one of the most demographically evolving regions in the United States. While many of the changes which have been incurred by the state as a whole, there are adverse impacts to this high level of immigration. Californian immigration has, in fact, both social and spatial consequences. Clark investigates these impacts and asserts that if the current immigration patterns are maintained not only the state but also the nation could suffer dire consequences. A 3 page review of a June 2004 article from the New York Times concerning the resignation of Governor John G. Rowland. The author of this paper observes that the article is written from a strictly objective view and its intent is obviously to outline the circumstances surrounding a tedious political situation. The author concludes that the article does an exceptional job of reporting in a non-biased and informative way, of providing information not only on the wrongdoing surrounding the case but also other important details, perhaps the most important of which is the summary of what this resignation will mean for Connecticut. The author highlights the main points presented in the article and emphasizes that is useful not only in detailing the Supreme Court ruling but also in outlining the set of circumstances under which it occurred. It is just as useful, however, in the fact that it assesses what the ruling could mean to Americans.
