Bahamian Immigration Policy

This 25 page paper discusses Bahamian immigration policy, and finds that it is neither fair nor "transparent," but instead appears to be unfairly applied in some cases. Further, because of The Bahamas as a location for offshore banking, it attracts wealthy people who appear able to "jump the line" for residency. In addition, companies complain that they are unable to hire the workers they need because of the stringent immigration regulations, which have the effect of barring foreign workers from specialized positoins; however, because there is no college in the island, native Bahamians often have few of the skills necessary for these jobs, leaving companies with the necessity of cutting their workforce, often throwing native Bahamians out of work. Finally, the paper considers the huge problem of illegal immigrants, mostly Haitians, and their impact on The Bahamas. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Banana Production in Costa Rica

An 8 page paper discussing changes occurring in banana culture during the decade of the 1990s. Costa Rica's experience with altering its banana production process illustrates that environmental concerns need not be limited only to fully developed nations. A much better path is that of preventing environmental destruction and depletion, particularly in nations largely dependent on agricultural exports for much of the national income. The case also demonstrates that it is not only young companies that can learn and innovate. Chiquita is more than 100 years old, and it led the industrial way in altering banana culture practice. Banking Systems of Argentina and the United States

A 7 page paper comparing the central banking systems of Argentina and the US. It appears that the primary difference in the central banks of Argentina and the US (aside from direct government involvement) is the ability of each to control the money supply as well as interest rates as instruments used in fine-tuning the orchestration of the market as described by Adam Smith. Smith’s “invisible hand” can become too heavy for the market to bear without any central bank intervention, but the central banks of both Argentina and the United States both have demonstrated in too-recent memory that ill-advised action can be as detrimental as no action at all.
