A 10 page paper discussing this programming language's likely future. COBOL has outlived all sorts of advances in hardware, software and uses, many of which were expected to place COBOL's final nail. However, it is clear that COBOL is will remain a significant force in business applications. Not only do existing legacy systems center on the language, but 15% of all new development currently is in COBOL. Those universities that have abandoned teaching the language completely do their students no favor. Comparing the ISA of the 80x86 and the MIPS R2000

A 9 page paper discussing these two approaches. The MIPS R2000 was introduced in 1986, eight years after Intel's first 8086 chip that later became the 80x86 in various incarnations. A new Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) was introduced for each wider subsequent word length and followed the 1985 introduction of the 80386. Though the ISAs of the 80x86 and the R2000 accomplish the same ends, they arrive at those ends via very different paths. It is likely that the 80x86 ISA will contintue to be developed because of continued backward compatibility, but the RISC approach is likely now to gain greater attention and acceptability as well.
