Visual culture refers to the context of an object and the features of that object that give it an understood meaning within a particular society. For example, "a heap of garbage" that is arranged by an artist in a particular manner and displayed within a museum can be classified as "fine art," but random garbage on the street is not considered to be an "important reflection of human intention" (Freedman 38).
